Jolly green Giant?
I was given a Christmas cactus in full bloom 2 years ago and it never bloomed again. How do I make it bloom again?
Do you want this?
This is a common question. Many people put it in their kitchen or living room window and in many cases it never blooms again.
This plant Schlumbergera is a tropical jungle cactus, not a desert cactus. Cold temperatures do not make it bloom.
Schlumbergera plant will bloom when the nights become longer in the Fall and the temperature is between 13 and 18 degrees Celsius. In a perfect world there should be opened flowers late in October or in early November.
Or do you want this?
Kitchen or living room windows often have light on at night or in the evening. If you can put it in a room where you do not go at night from mid-September until you see flower buds are visible.
It will need light to keep the buds growing and cool temperatures.
A common complaint: just before the flowers opened the buds dropped off.
Prevention: keep the plant cool 13 and 18 degrees Celsius in a well lit window and this will not happen. Temperature of 22 or greater will make the buds drop off 0celcius.
Added Bonus: Christmas cactus will sometimes rebloom in the spring if kept in a cool well lit room with no evening light.
